Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the old English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
