Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He created the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
