It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose.
