Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved down south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
