Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights played Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the country. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he established the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
