Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps formed from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
