Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the non-winning toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
