Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s paladins played Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French headed south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is gotten from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
